The field of fisheries genetics has significantly advanced in recent years, primarily due to technological progress in genetic sequencing. With the SAFE® 96 Tissue Collection Tool, it is now possible to genotype a large number of tissue samples with many genetic markers at relatively low costs to determine population or stock structure. This has sparked interest in applying genetic methods to identify fish stocks to define appropriate levels for the aggregation of assessment data and the implementation of management measures.
With the increase in sampling efforts and the development of international genetic sampling programs, there is a need for specialized tools like the SAFE® 96 Tissue Collection Tool for genetic sample collection. These tools are designed to ensure that a standardized collection and storage method is applied, guaranteeing high tissue sample quality and enabling downstream automation of sample processing.
The SAFE® 96 Tissue Collection System from LVL was developed in collaboration with European fisheries scientists and fisheries industry organizations and represents a significant advancement in the collection and storage of fish tissue samples for genetic analyses. The novel system is based on LVL’s SAFE® biobanking consumables and combines a standard SBS rack with 96 barcoded tubes and 2D-barcoded tubes with internal threads. Notably, the genetic sample collection device is integrated into the screw cap of the tubes.
This unique sample collection tool is specifically designed for use on fish. The pointed tip and rear-facing blade allow the collection of a tissue sample of approximately 30 mg under the skin of the fish being sampled, avoiding surface contamination. The tools, tubes, and racks are pre-assembled and delivered sterile to ensure the highest quality and safety. The SAFE® 96 Tissue Collection System offers an efficient and reliable solution for tissue sample collection and storage in modern fisheries genetics.
The SAFE® 96 Tissue Collection Tool thus supports efficient and reliable tissue collection, which is essential for modern fisheries genetics.
